Frequently Asked Questions

Please use the following link to access our self-service booking tool. Once you book, you will recieve a series of emails that outline all of the steps you need to complete prior to your examination.

We offer Transport Canada Aviation Medical Examinations, aerospace medical consults as well as full service consulting services to industry.

To ensure fair availability, appointments only become available 3 weeks in advance. Please ensure that you are using the correct appointment type and if nothing is showing, consider checking again the following Monday.

We typically book appointments in 30 minutes blocks to allow sufficient time to discuss any issues that may arise. That being said, depending on the complexity, your appointment may take longer if required.

When arriving at your appointment, you will need:

  • Any medications (which includes any over the counter medications) that you are currently using
  • Your pilot license document booklet or driver’s licence
  • Your current medical or ADB
  • Your most recent eyeglasses prescription (if applicable)
  • Your glasses and/or contact lenses (if applicable)
  • Any recent EKG, audiograms or other testing from your physicians
  • Copies of any medical documents from treating physicians

Yes, under the current Transport Canada CARs exemption (CAME-002-2025), telemedicine or virtual examinations remain possible. Pilots interested in virtual renewals should review CARs Standard 424 and the appropriate CARs exemption.

It is important to note that virtual medicals do not have the standard validity periods.  All medical certificates renewed by telemedicine, regardless of the category, have a maximum validity period of 12 months. The validity periods are:

  • The validity period of a medical certificate renewed by telemedicine is until the first day of the month that follows a 12-month period after the date of the telemedicine consultation, but,
  • if the applicant is 60 years of age or older, or is 40 years of age or older and is conducting a single-pilot operation with passengers on board, the validity period of a medical certificate renewed by telemedicine is until the first day of the month that follows a 6-month period after the date of the telemedicine consultation.

In general, the medical category you need depends on what your flying plans are.

Category 1 medicals are required for a commercial pilot's license.

Category 2 medicals are required for air traffic controllers.

Category 3 medicals are typically held by private pilots.

Category 4 medicals are typically for a student pilot permit, recreational permit or for ultralights.

There are more specifics which can be found on the Transport Canada Aviation Medicine Website. If you still aren't sure, an aviation consultation appointment can be booked to discuss your options with Dr. Sirek.

As detailed on the Transport Canada Aviation Medicine Website:

Once you hold an Aviation Medical Certificate, you must report any changes that could affect your medical fitness.

For example:

  • You must report any change to your medical status. You can do this by informing any Civil Aviation Medical Examiner (CAME)
  • You must tell any physician or optometrist that’s treating you that you're an aviation professional
  • You’re not allowed to exercise the privileges or your permit, licence, or rating if there’s a change in your health status that could affect your fitness to perform your duties. This includes illness, injury, or medications
  • You must “ground” yourself (not fly any kind of aircraft) for at least 28 days after using cannabis

Changes in your medical status could result in the temporary suspension of your medical certificate to reassess your medical fitness and allow for treatment and/or recovery. Recertification will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

To check the status of your medical certificate request, log into the Civil Aviation Medical Portal.

Your medical will be submitted to Transport Canada immediately by the office. Processing times by Transport Canada vary and will depend on your medical status. We can discuss estimates during your appointment.
